Cora-Marie and Jake Yoder attend the 2005
Delaware Hospice Volunteer Recognition Dinner in Dover.
Cora-Marie was saved from a heart attack by Dr. Austria several
years ago. In deep gratitude, she visited him after recovering and
said, “I can’t possibly repay you for what you did for me by saving my
life, but I can do volunteer work in your honor.” He told her that his
wife volunteers with an organization called Delaware Hospice.
Coincidentally, Cora-Marie’s husband, Jake, had been interested in
volunteering at Delaware Hospice upon the recommendation of a friend,
and so the organization grew by two volunteers one lucky day.
Cora-Marie remembered, “In the first years of our involvement, we
delivered medicine to patients. Later, we got involved in patient
care. The first patient Jake helped was a woman who wished she had a
garden. So Jake planted a garden.”
Patient care became their specialty and the husband-wife team approach
has worked well for them. “I might do some shopping for a family and
run short of time, and Jake will pick up the slack and make the
delivery,” she explained.
“People become like family to us, especially when we’re both involved,
and many times we already knew the patients personally if they were
from this area.” These days, Cora-Marie has been providing tremendous
support to the Night of Lights Silent Auction preparations, and she and
Jake are planning their very active support of the Festival of Trees event itself.
Cora-Marie and Jake admire the staff of Delaware Hospice and feel that
people are friendly and wonderful to work with. “We’re all there for
the same purpose,” she said, “helping families, teaching them what to
expect, what they can do for their loved one, and what’s available in
the community.”
Cora-Marie appreciates how she’s grown personally from her volunteer
experiences at Delaware Hospice. “I realize that patients help the
people helping them with their positive attitudes, how they deal with
reality, how they cope so well with real problems. It makes me sit
back and wonder why I can’t cope with my relatively minor ones.”
Cora-Marie and Jake have a son and daughter and 4 grandchildren, who all live nearby and take up most of their time. They highly recommend Delaware Hospice to anyone considering volunteer work. Cora-Marie emphatically stated, “It’s a great organization!”
DELAWARE HOSPICE OFFERS FALL TRAINING SESSIONS FOR VOLUNTEERS
As
the only non-profit hospice organization in the state of Delaware,
Delaware Hospice has been meeting community needs for 24 years, thanks
to the support of its dedicated volunteers.
Volunteers are needed throughout Kent
County to relieve caregivers, provide grief support, or help with
fundraisers, community awareness, and office work. While visiting a
patient, a volunteer might offer a listening ear, read a book, share
stories or just sit and hold their hand.
Volunteer training for new Delaware Hospice volunteers will take place on Saturday, October 21st, and Saturday, October 28th, from 8:30 – 4:00, at the Delaware Hospice Office in Dover, 911 S. DuPont Hwy.
To register or learn more, call Judy Knutstad, Volunteer Coordinator, at 678-4448, ext. 117.
Volunteering for Delaware Hospice has a wonderful way of putting your life into perspective.
Life is precious… make the most of yours, and someone else’s.
