The Right Time to Connect with Delaware Hospice

Often, individuals and their families tell us they wish they had contacted us sooner. Many people perceive that hospice is a resource to contact when the very end of a life-limiting illness is near. It’s true we provide an individual with comfort and care during the final stages of a serious illness; but we also offer direction, support, and referrals to resources long before that time.

Generally, if you can answer “yes” to two or more of these questions, it is an appropriate time to connect with Delaware Hospice:

  • Have you been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, including heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, liver and lung disease, or kidney failure?

  • Has your illness prevented you from managing your own basic needs, such as dressing, bathing, eating or getting out of bed?

  • Has your pain occurred more frequently, or become debilitating?

  • Are you experiencing symptoms, such as shortness of breath or dizziness, which require attention?

  • Have you made frequent visits to the emergency room or hospital?

  • Do you require around-the-clock care?

  • Have you experienced a sudden, involuntary weight loss?

At the Time of Diagnosis:
When you or a family member has been diagnosed with a serious illness, Delaware Hospice can help you to navigate your options for help in the year or months before hospice care is needed. We connect you with resources to help manage your daily needs, including personal care, housekeeping, transportation, meal services, and more.

When a Serious Illness Presents Challenges in Daily Living
Living with a serious illness presents many new challenges. Delaware Hospice assists individuals when their illness prevents them from taking care of their basic needs, including bathing, eating, dressing, getting out of bed or walking, or, when the individual makes repeated trips to the emergency room or hospital. Our caring staff is trained to assess the right time to partner with a Delaware Hospice team.

When the Need Arises for Pain or Symptom Management:
At Delaware Hospice, a primary mission of ours is to advocate for the comfort of the individual coping with a life-limiting disease.
