Top 5 Steps Toward Healing from Grief
There are several steps you can take that will help you feel a bit more in control of your own healing from the loss of a loved one.
Practice accepting your pain: Avoiding your feelings only serves to make them stronger, so allow yourself the time and space to tend to your pain. It is true that life as you knew it has changed; but it still has purpose and meaning. Take your time; and don’t expect too much, too soon.
Be gentle with yourself: Get plenty of rest and exercise, eat a healthy diet, and accept help from others. Fatigue is the number one symptom in grief. Allow yourself time to recharge… squeeze in a 15-minute nap, indulge in a warm bath or take a quiet walk to rejuvenate. Everything looks bleaker when you are tired.
Take charge where you can. Grief can make us feel “out of control”. Assume some control where you’re able to – maintain your daily routines, exercise, get out with friends, or work if you find solace and comfort in tasks.
Count your blessings. The journey through grief is a time for you to rediscover your soul, or the essence of what makes you truly unique. Ask the questions, search for the answers, and find your anchor. Turn to others for support. You’ve offered help to those in need; now, accept it graciously, striking a balance between giving and receiving.
Maintain a hopeful attitude. You may wonder if the pain will ever subside. It does take time, but most people regain their original interest in life again. Try not to rush things; healing doesn’t happen overnight, but it will happen with patience and effort.
