Delaware Hospice representative, Barbara Tucker, was the keynote speaker at Sussex County’s Women’s Democratic Club during their February meeting at the Sussex Pines Country Club.

Ms. Tucker gave members an overview of hospice care and discussed unique aspects of Delaware Hospice’s services.  She explained that the benefits of hospice care are frequently not realized when families call too late.  She said, “Hospice care is for all the family—not just the patient, and care is provided by a team of professionals including a nurse, certified nursing assistant, social worker, and a chaplain, who strive to personalize that care according to each family and situation.”

Ms. Tucker informed the group about Delaware Hospice’s unique services.  “As a not-for-profit hospice, we answer to the community rather than shareholders, and we have been able to develop several special programs.  For example, New Hope is a program for children who have lost loved ones; and our Transitions Program provides assistance to individuals who are seriously ill but not appropriate for hospice care.”

She said that the generosity of individuals, businesses and foundations have enabled Delaware Hospice to provide those programs and services above and beyond traditional hospices.  More than 750 volunteers statewide play a key role in the organization, providing patient support as well as helping out in the offices or at fundraising events.  Families often choose Delaware Hospice for memorial gifts; and key fundraising events such as the Festival of Trees provide significant financial assistance to the organization.

The new, state-of-the-art Delaware Hospice Center, in Milford, serves as an example of Delaware Hospice’s reinvestment in the community.  The Center has become a haven for patient and families seeking relief from acute symptoms.  In addition, its modern Community Conference Room provides a meeting place for local clubs and organizations.

Women’s Democratic Club members thanked Ms. Tucker, and a few inspired individuals asked for information about volunteering with Delaware Hospice.
