The nominees for 25 Who Matter

The following have been nominated by readers to be profiled in a yearlong series by The News Journal titled "25 Who Matter." The purpose is to recognize those who quietly but consistently make a difference in their community.

Deborah Jastrebski -- Co-founder and CEO of Practice Without Pressure, a nonprofit that helps people with disabilities receive quality medical, dental and personal care.

Eleanor Kiesel -- An attorney with Community Legal Aid Society Inc. in Georgetown, which helps victims of abuse and those dealing with issues such as wrongful evictions. She also is active with Abriendo Puertas, a shelter for immigrant victims.

The late William M. Killen -- Worked for more than a decade in the Public Defender's Office on behalf of disenfranchised Delaware inmates.

The Rev. Thomas Layman -- Since 2003, president of the Sunday Breakfast Mission, which provides hot meals to hundreds of homeless people. He also conducts the Great Thanksgiving Food Drive each year and launched the Family Rescue Campaign with the goal of building a 31,000-square-foot facility to house 80 women and children who have no shelter.

Greg Lewis -- Assignor referee for Kirkwood Soccer Club and others.

Susan Lloyd -- Longtime president and CEO of Delaware Hospice, the only nonprofit hospice in the state. The program currently serves more than 700 families a day. It also has served about 33,000 families in the more than 20 years that Lloyd has been there.

Joe McDonough -- After Joe and his wife, Chris, lost their son Andrew to leukemia, they created the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation to provide financial assistance to children and families from 30 states.

Cathy Devaney McKay -- President and chief executive officer of Connections Community Support Programs Inc., which provides housing for more than 500 individuals and families with low incomes. It also operates eight clinics and three regional services centers.

John McNeal -- Was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident at age 22 and now is a disabilities rights activist. He works as a food stamp auditor for the Division of Social Services.

Brian Miller -- Art teacher at Middletown High School who volunteers to decorate the themed houses at the Historic Homes of Odessa and other art events.
