June 2 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

As we face life’s inevitable challenges and grow older, we will likely need to rely on others more than we have in the past. For many, this is challenging. Whether you grew up having to rely on yourself from a young age because of family problems or have internalized the cultural ethos of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps,” you likely find it hard to ask. The vulnerability that accompanies needing others can also feel frightening. But to be successful in life and age well we need to confront our fears and reservations and accept support. For those of us not cared for well in the past, it creates an opportunity to have a different experience of what it means to rely on others. Research suggests our anxiety about asking is likely exaggerated. In one study people underestimated by as much as 50% the likelihood that others would agree to a direct request for help. See some of the most common barriers to asking for help and how to get over them.
