
Lunch Bunch (Virtual): How Grief Persists – Prolonged Grief Disorder and The Lingering Impact of Grief

Many people experience grief that lasts longer than friends or family expect. Grief is a normal and appropriate response to loss. But 1 in 10 develop a prolonged grief disorder. This is characterized by intense yearning for the deceased and difficulty reengaging with life for more than a year. Other symptoms include: marked disbelief about the death; avoidance of reminders the person is dead; intense emotional pain or numbness; feeling life is meaningless; and, intense loneliness. This reaction is most common among people who have lost a child or a partner and the death was sudden or violent.
