Before her own death in 2004, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler completed On Grief and Grieving, which looks at the way we experience grief. This book applies the stages of death — denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance — to the grieving process and weaves together theory, inspiration, and practical advice, including sections on sadness, hauntings, dreams, isolation, and healing. It has a crystal clear structure, the authors highly know the real nature of the grief process. They explain that every person has – and has to experience – their own, unique grief, there are no two alike. Therefore there is no universal recipe to help. It breaks down the stages of grief (these are not necessarily sequential) and deals with emotional issues surrounding the loss of somebody close. We are not a society that deals with grief. We are expected to “get over” it. This book teaches us that we never get over it. We must live with it and find joy and happiness in our life. The book On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief through the Five Stages of Loss is required reading for this group and can be purchased online.
